SANDYMOUNT, a maritime village in the parish of St. Mary's, Donnybrook, Dublin barony and county, 3 miles S.E. by E., from tile General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 243 acres. Population, 1,142, inhabiting 160 houses.

It is picturesquely situated on the S. shore of' the bay of Dublin ; the greater portion forming a square, the centre of which is tastefully laid out, and enclosed with iron palisading, and on the S. side is tile Convent of the Sisters of Charity, annexed to which is a neat Chapel. A Church, the site for which has been granted by the Hon. Sydney Herbert, the proprietor in fee, is about to be erected. There is a Savings' Bank and a Parochial and Female Free School supported by subscription. It is much frequented as a bathing-place in the summer, from its fine smooth strand. Along the beach and in the avenues around, there are many handsome seats and pretty ranges of houses, or detached villas ; the principle of the former are Lakelands, Willfield-house, and Sandymount-park ; all of which command fine views of Dublin bay, tile mountains, Hill of Howth, Lambay, &c.

An Omnibus and jaunting vans from and to College street, Dublin, ply constantly every day at a fare of 3d. each passenger. It is within the General Post Office delivery. Letters to be forwarded same day or evening, must be deposited in the Post Office receiver at noon, or by 4, p.m.
