The default search option checks for exact matches, and also placenames that begin with the search text. Wildcards are also allowed in this search mode - use . (full stop) to check for a single character, and * (star) for more than one character. e.g. sh.l*g*n would locate the townland of Shelbaggan, Co. Wexford, or *buck to locate all placenames ending in "buck", e.g. Ballyroebuck, Carnbuck etc
Soundex and Metaphone are two types of 'sounds like' indexes.
