Show Surname distribution by County in Ireland for the 1850s. Results are shown as a list by county and as a map, with more intemse shades of colour indicating counties higher numbers. A list of alternatives is displayed when entering surname in the search field, the matchesshown are surnames found with the same starting letters. e.g. can listsCanavan, Canty, Cantwell etc. * are allowed as wildcards e.g. C*r*th*lists Carthy, Caruth etc. An option to show variations in surnames is included, which includessimilar surnames and alternates for many common surnames. For 'O' names, the space or ' has been removed, and indexed as OByrne, OSullivan etc. An initial wildcard isallowed - e.g. a search for *sull* returns both OSullivan, and Sullivan.Mac/Mc surnames currently appear on the index with several variations, including - e.g. Mc Grath,Mac Bride, McCabe, MGuire etc - the include variation optionwill detect many of these. (Work on the surname variant index is ongoing, and further links will added overthe coming months.) The statistics used for this search are derived from an index to Griffith's Primary Valuation which tookplace between 1847 and 1864.
